Alveolar Echinococcus, a rare cause of liver transplantation.

چکیده
A 14-year-old child came to our pediatric clinic complaining of intermittent abdominal pain. Liver function tests showed deterioration. Multidetector computed tomography was performed, which revealed a non-enhanced solid mass. Computed tomography discovered calcifications in the mass (Fig. 1). With a pathology specimen, the mass was diagnosed as alveolar echinococcosis. The patient is currently awaiting liver transplantation. Echinococcosis is an endemic parasitic disease, but it has begun to be seen in Europe. Symptoms may occur too late, and liver involvement can lead to liver failure. It is a particularly rare cause of liver transplantation in children. c i r e s p . 2 0 1 7 ; x x ( x x ) : x x x – x x x

Alveolar hydatid disease always affects the liver and can metastasise to the lung and brain. Early diagnosis and precise evaluation of the localization as well as the extent of lesions are essential for treatment. In this report, we present ultrasound and compu...

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a hepatic venous outflow block generally resulting from disorders affecting hepatic venous system. Elevated hepatic venous pressure results in portal hypertension. BCS may also cause hepatic encephalopathy. Echinococcus multilocularis is a tapeworm parasite and the natural course of the disease may affect liver parenchyma as well as hepatic venous tree. It is the m...

BACKGROUND Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a neglected zoonosis presenting with focal liver lesions (FLL) with a wide range of imaging patterns resembling benign as well as malignant FLLs. Complementary serology and histopathology may be misleading. OBJECTIVE The objective of our study is to highlight pitfalls leading to wrong diagnoses and harmful interventions in patients with AE. DESIGN ...

Summarized in this article are recent experiences in the treatment of human cystic echinococcosis (CE) and alveolar echinococcosis (AE) of the liver caused by the metacestode stages of Echinococcus granulosus and E. multilocularis, respectively. For CE, surgery remains the first choice for treatment with the potential to remove totally the parasite and completely cure the patient. However, chem...
